Michael Purcell – Criminal Lawyer

Potts Lawyers > Our Criminal & Litigation Lawyers > Michael Purcell – Criminal Lawyer

Michael has worked in the criminal justice system for his entire working life. He joined the firm in 2008 and is one of our leading senior criminal lawyers. His experience informs his gift of being able to explain to clients clearly and simply what is likely to happen next in their matter. Critically, he can map out a path which achieves the best possible outcome… and that is often one which genuinely exceeds client expectations.

Michael was admitted as a barrister in 2003. He also has over two decades experience as a prosecutor in Magistrates Courts throughout the State. He prosecuted extensively throughout Queensland, including service in the Legal Services section of the Department of Natural Resources, Mines & Water Brisbane as a principal lawyer and team leader of their compliance prosecution section.  In that role he had responsibility for the carriage of prosecutions, appeals & administrative actions throughout the State. As a consequence Michael has developed excellent negotiation skills with Crown Law and the Director of Public Prosecutions.

In private practice he has represented clients in the Supreme, District, Magistrates and Local Courts, in both Queensland and NSW, developing an in-depth knowledge of criminal law in both states.  He has represented persons charged with serious crimes including murder, sex crimes, assaults and serious drug offences in those jurisdictions. He has over many years also developed an interest and expertise in domestic violence court and practice.

His strong reputation for ethical practice means he is called upon by other lawyers for advice and guidance. Michael has close ties to the community through volunteer roles at the PCYC and Surf Lifesaving, which he views as important in sustaining his experience in Courts.
