Before there is a knee-jerk reaction, we need to improve the technology and the testing of drug drivers so the courts can see the levels of effect of drugs on people stopped by the police.
At the moment we don’t have the technology which can quickly compare drink driving to drug driving – we don’t have the facilities to compare apples against apples.
For a drug driver, you need to get blood tests and the opinion of a medical officer.
All of that takes a long time – sometimes from three to six months.
